In most industries, the person buying products or services is in the driver’s seat. In health care, the customer is most often an insurer, resulting in misaligned incentives, distorted demand signals, and lack of empowerment for patients. What would be the outcome if we could center the business of health care around the patient as the customer?

The Design of the Overall Health Care System

The traditional health care system is set up to treat patients when they’re sick, but fails to keep them healthy. We spend $4.5 trillion in the U.S. on health care but see the prevalence of chronic conditions continue to rise. What is needed to build a new system that prioritizes true prevention and engages consumers in and out of the clinic?

Affordability And Accessibility

26 million Americans are uninsured. But even the insured do not always have access to affordable health care. 50% of working adults have high-deductible health plans, with an average annual premium of over $22,000 for a family. Costs of services are increasing year over year, at a time when 36% of adults in the country have more unsecured debt than emergency savings. Inflation is a feature, not a bug, of the current system. How can entrepreneurs leverage technological innovation to drive down costs in a new system without losing the humanity patients want?
